In 1189-1190 he participated in the third crusade , the conquest of the city of Iconium and the siege of Acre .
He quarreled with the counts of Holland and the bishops of Utrecht. Supported the duchy of Limburg in his war with Brabant. Made raids on friezes. In the struggle between Philip of Swabian and Otto of Brunswick, he supported the Staufen .

OK. 1184 Otto I married Richard of Bavaria (died 1231), daughter of the Bavarian Duke Otto I. Children:

- Gerhard III (1185–1229), Count Geldern and Zütfen
- Otto (1194–1215), Bishop of Utrecht from 1213
- Ludwig (d. 1217), canon in Utrecht
- Adelaide (1187–1218), from 1197 married to Count William I of the Netherlands [2]
- Ermengarde, husband - Adolphe de la Marc, Count of Altena and Mark (died 1249)
- Margaret, husband - Lothar II von Hochstaden
- Matilda, husband - Count Henry II von Nassau
