History
Prototypes GAZ-19 and GAZ-19A were built in Gorky in 1955. Both had identical all-metal closed bodies with original side doors, a roof and a two-wing rear door. The difference was the presence of glazing in the GAZ-19A, which, if necessary, allowed people to be transported in the back; GAZ-19 instead of glass had blank dies on body panels. The main purpose was considered to be the maintenance of postal institutions, although potentially such a car could also be used as a city delivery van.
The development of these models in mass production was hindered mainly by the fact that the own production of dies and molds at the Gorky plant was fully loaded at that moment - a number of new models were being prepared for development. Against her spoke a relatively small need for a car of this type, which made the organization of its production economically unprofitable . In addition, the production of the GAZ-69 base model was already planned for transfer to the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant, which made the development of new car modifications in Gorky irrational. In Ulyanovsk, however, its own, more advanced design was created - the UAZ-450 wagon of the wagon layout, compared with which the GAZ-19 with its bonnet layout and irrational use of the length of the body seemed clearly outdated.
Subsequently, low-volume production of such vans on the GAZ-69 chassis was deployed at some car repair plants.
