Alfred Manuel “Billy” Marty , Jr. During his career, Martin played for five different teams. As general manager, he helped the New York Yankees win the American League title in 1976 and 1977, and won the 1977 World Series . He also worked as a manager for several more AL teams and four of them helped to win the division title.

Martin was known as a manager capable of making winning teams out of bad teams, as well as for his disputes with referees. However, he was often criticized for not getting along well with veteran players and club owners, he intensively used young pitchers and had problems with alcohol. In the period from 1969 to 1988, Martin won 1,253 victories as manager, and his percentage of matches won was 55.3%.
