After joining the army at the beginning of World War I, Cole was sent in 1916 to the Australian Air Corps, where he served in the 1st Squadron in the Middle East, and then in the 2nd Squadron on the Western Front in Europe. He was recognized as an ace fighter, shooting down at least ten enemy aircraft, for which he was awarded the British Military Cross and the Cross For Outstanding Flight Merit . Later he received the Order of the British Empire and the Order of Distinguished Service . In 1921 he became one of the founders of the RAAF.
In 1935, Cole was promoted to the rank of commander, a year later he was appointed commander of the RAAF base in Richmond near Sydney. During World War II, Cole became head of the Northwestern Military District in Darwin, and then, taking a number of posts in North Africa, England, Northern Ireland and Ceylon. During the raid on Dieppe in 1942, he was wounded. After retiring in 1946, Cole joined the board of directors of a number of aviation companies.
