Andrew Murray ( born Andrew Murray ; May 9, 1828 , Reinet - January 18, 1917 ) is a South African religious figure, pastor, teacher and religious writer.
Born in Graff-Reinet in the family of a missionary in the Dutch Reformed Church, who was sent to South Africa from Scotland. The ancestors of his mother were the French Huguenots and German Lutherans. He received his initial education with his older brother John in Aberdeen, Scotland. After receiving a degree in 1845, they both entered the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, where they studied theology. On May 9, 1848, they were ordained priests in The Hague and returned to South Africa. On July 2, 1856, Andrew Murray married Emma Rutherford, married to whom he had four sons and four daughters.
He served as a pastor in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, Wellington. Since 1860, he actively preached Rivevelism . In 1889, he became one of the founders of the Main South African Mission (SAGM). Over his life he wrote more than 240 theological works and is considered one of the largest religious leaders in South Africa.
