History
Until 1945, the city belonged to Germany and was the eastern part of the city of Görlitz , divided by the Neisse River. During the Second World War , Stalag VIIIA existed in the city.
After the war, the eastern part of the city was separated from Goerlitz (see Goerlitz history ). The Soviet army transferred control of the city into the hands of the Polish authorities, and the remaining German population was deported to the Soviet occupation zone of Germany . At first it was not clear whether the right-bank part of the city would be finally included in the Polish Republic, and therefore, in the first months and years after 1945, few Poles settled here. Instead, in 1949, about 15,000 refugees from Greece were deployed in the city, fleeing the civil war in their country. [one]
On July 6, 1950, the Zgorzeletsky Treaty was signed between the NDP and the German Democratic Republic , which determined the eastern border of Germany along the Oder - Neisse line . From this moment, the development of eastern Goerlitz as a Polish city began, the German name of which was translated into Polish and accepted as official.
