Career
In 1979, after the flood, a sixteen-year-old Payeng found reptiles on the banks of the river that died because of the absence of trees [8] . He began planting trees in 1980, when the forest department of the Golagkhat region launched a project to plant 200 hectares of forest on the deserted island of Aruna-Chapori, located five kilometers from the village of Kokilamukh in the Jorhat district . Molai took part in this project all the years, and at the end he stayed there, looking after the forest and planting trees.
Bengal tigers , Indian rhinos , more than a hundred deer and rabbits, as well as many monkeys and birds, including vultures, live in the Molaya forest [6] . A herd of elephants of one hundred individuals annually spends about six months in the forest, during the existence of the forest elephants gave birth to more than ten cubs there [9] . Poachers tried to hunt rhinos living in the forest, but Molai reported them to the authorities, and the foresters destroyed the traps set by the poachers [9] .
There are several tens of thousands of trees growing in the forest, including cuckoo , bombard , , , fire tree , bamboo and bamboo , which covers more than 300 hectares [9] .
Jadawa’s efforts became known to the authorities in 2008, when the forest department sent specialists to search for a herd of elephants for 115 heads, which hid in the area after they had damaged Aruna-Chapori [ clarify ] , located one and a half kilometers from the forest. Having found the forest, the employees of the forest department began to visit it regularly [9] .
His next task, Molai, sees the planting of a forest on another sandy side of the Brahmaputra [10] [11] .
Personal life
Jadav belongs to the Mishing tribe and lives in a hut in the forest with his wife Binita and three children [6] . He keeps cattle on his plot and sells the milk received from him, this is the only source of his income [6] . In an interview, he said that tigers had killed about a hundred of his cows and buffaloes, but Jadav blames people for destroying forests, which is why animals are forced to look for other food [10] .
