Emperor Aleksei I Komnin receives Hugo Vermandois

One of the leaders of the First Crusade , brother of the French king Philip I. When crossing from the Italian city of Bari to Greece, he was shipwrecked and thrown out near the city of Dirrachia . He was picked up and escorted by an honorary escort to Constantinople , where he was forced to take his oath of allegiance to Emperor Alexei Komnin . He then showed miracles of courage in the battle of Dorile , but in 1098 , even before the capture of Jerusalem , he returned from Antioch to France. In 1101, he again took part in the Crusade to fulfill this vow; in the defeat suffered by the crusader army in Cappadocia , Hugo was wounded and died on October 18, 1102 .
