The illegitimate son of Magnus V Erlingsson , king of Norway from the dynasty. Horfagers . After the victory of King Sverrira I, the leaders of the bagler fled to Denmark . Erling himself lived for some time in Sweden, and then moved to the court of the Danish king Waldemar II . Taking advantage of the sudden death of King Haakon III , he put forward his claim to the throne. With the help of Danish troops, he landed in Norway and captured its southern and western parts. Here he was declared the new king. However, soon, in 1207, Erling I died unexpectedly. The battle of the baglers against the birkebeiners was continued by the regent of the sons of Erling I, Philip Simonsson .
