Architecture
The cinema building is two-storey in the main part, along the perimeter - a three-storey with basements, brick, plastered , the socle from the street is lined with plates of polished granite . In terms of a rectangular, three-hall, with a deep loggia of the entrance on the front facade and risalit on the back. Flat reinforced concrete overlaps, a complicated tin roof made of gable and single-slope parts, covering uneven rooms. The volume-planning structure with clearly demarcated functions is symmetric about the longitudinal axis. In the front part in the center there are ceremonial rooms for temporary stay, in the middle - spectacular, along the side facades - communication (corridors and staircases), in the rear part - film projection. On the ground floor, behind the entrance loggia, there is a cash lobby with a grand three-marsh stairs to the second floor, at the end of the vestibule there is a small auditorium with 250 seats with a separate entrance to the right of the lobby, as well as office premises of the cinema. The second floor is occupied by two large halls (“Red” and “Blue”, initially - “Blue”) with 525 seats each, adjacent to the two-level lobby with a mezzanine , where the concert hall and a buffet are located. Filling of the auditoriums comes from the common corridors , evacuation - through the side corridors with a wide staircase at the exit to the street.
The building was decided in the forms of Soviet neoclassicism using elements of Ukrainian decorative art . The front facade is symmetrical, triple. The protruding central part, by decision somewhat resembling the facade of the ancient “ temple in the antes ”, was completed with a triangular pediment , the side planes with a parapet in the form of a balustrade . A three-pronged loggia flanked by risalits is decorated with large rectangular columns and pilasters of a stylized Ionic order in front of the entrances. Resists, columns, pilasters and lateral planes of the facade are treated with a plank bed ; the space allocated for advertising on risalit is allocated as a blend in a classic frame. The timpanum of the pediment with a cartouche in the middle is filled with beautiful vegetative ornamentation , including sunflower flowers, grape clusters, characteristic of folk art, and so on. The pediment was initially crowned with a three-figured sculptural composition and angular acroteries with Soviet symbolism (not preserved). On the frieze, the inscription "Cinema" Kiev "." The large arched openings of the entrances in the depths of the loggia are decorated in the transomgs with beautiful cast gratings, their axes are accentuated from above with exquisite decorative vases that stand out against the vertical glazing of the two-tier foyer. Threefold evacuation apertures (exits) and windows on the side planes of the facade of a rectangular shape, triple windows on the second floor are decorated with triangular sandriks . Yard facades with rectangular slots simplified.
The interiors of the interiors are made in the forms of historicism traditional for the 1950s using order elements (pilasters, pylons ), stucco details (cornices, capitals , framing of entrances), artificial stone (vestibule floors, front staircase, balustrade fences), etc.
During the construction of the cinema for the first time in Ukraine, a special acoustic plaster was used, contributing to the clarity of sound.
Since 2000 , the first major overhaul in its history began at the cinema. The auditoriums were reconstructed with the arrangement of amphitheaters. The film screenings after reconstruction were resumed on March 22, 2002 (in the “Red” hall) and on January 17, 2003 (in “Blue”).
