The wedding night

In search of inspiration for his new book, which should improve his financial situation, the young writer Tony Baret (Gary Cooper) goes with his wife to the family estate. Here he meets his neighbors - the family of Polish immigrants Novakov, engaged in tobacco growing, and made friends with the daughter of Mr. Novak Maney (Anna Stan). Thirsty for entertaining wife Bareta soon returns to the city. Baret begins to write a new novel, inspired by the observations of the idyllic rural life of expats. Between him and Manya love is born. But the conservative Novak family considers the close communication between Bareth and Manet to discredit the honor of the girl, and decides to quickly marry her to Frederick, with whom she is engaged. Arriving to open his feelings to the writer on the eve of the wedding, Manya is subjected to aggression by the wife of Bareth, who returned from the city. She recognizes in Mani the prototype of the main character of her husband’s novel and prevents their meetings. At the wedding, where Baret falls, a scandal begins, provoked by a drunken Frederick. Separating Bareth and Frederick, Manya is fatally injured, falling from the stairs.

In 1935, the film won a prize for directing at the Venice Film Festival . This film is considered the peak of Anna Stan's stellar career. Having suffered a box office loss from the film's rental, producer Samuel Goldwin broke the contract with Anna Stan, after which her career began to decline.
