Biography
Joseph Ostapenko was born on April 22, 1918 in the village of Second Konovalovka (now - Mashevsky district of the Poltava region of Ukraine ). After graduating from high school, he worked on a collective farm . In 1937 - 1940, Ostapenko served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In July 1941, he was again drafted into the army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War. In 1942, Ostapenko graduated from junior lieutenant courses. In battles he was wounded four times [1] .
By March 1944, Lieutenant Joseph Ostapenko commanded a mortar platoon of the 859th Infantry Regiment of the 294th Infantry Division of the 52nd Army of the 2nd Ukrainian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Ukrainian and Moldavian SSR. Ostapenko's platoon was one of the first to cross the Dniester in the Mogilev-Podolsky area , taking an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead. In battles on the approaches to the Prut River, a platoon captured two German mortars and opened fire on them from the enemy, forcing him to withdraw. On March 25, 1944, in the battle for the Rodzel station near Balti, Ostapenko personally fired from a captured mortar mortar against the enemy, repelling four German counterattacks. In that battle, Ostapenko was injured [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944, for “courage and heroism shown during the crossing of the Dniester and keeping the bridgehead on its western shore,” Lieutenant Joseph Ostapenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6655 [1] .
He participated in the Soviet-Japanese war. In 1946, Ostapenko was sacked. He lived and worked in the village of Abramovka, Mashevsky district, Poltava region, Ukrainian SSR. Suddenly died in 1962 [1] .
He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
In honor of Ostapenko, a street in Mashevka was named [1] .
