The Society for General Knowledge ( Polish Towarzystwo Wiedzy Powszechnej, TWP ) is a Polish public organization whose main goal is to educate and educate adults, youth and children, as well as methodological work among teachers and the development of practical skills among adults. The company operates through the organization of various lectures, exhibitions and organization of interest clubs . Currently, the administration of the General Knowledge Society is located in Warsaw in the Palace of Culture and Science .
History
The Society of General Knowledge was founded on May 5, 1950 by order of the Council of Ministers on the basis of the disbanded Society of Workers' and People's University and the publishing house "Cultural and Educational Community" Czytelnik "" [1] . The decision to create the Society for General Knowledge was signed by Prime Minister Jozef Tsirankevich . The charter of the company was approved by the Council of Ministers on December 4, 1959 [2] .
The society of general knowledge organized the so-called " universal universities ". The first universal university was organized in 1956 in the city of Bydgoszcz . This university was founded by Professor Casimir Sosnitsky. In the late 1950s, there were already around 500 such universal universities operating throughout Poland, mainly in rural areas. At the end of the 50s, upon completion of the courses of the universal university, certificates of their completion were issued.
In the late 90s of the XX century, the Society of General Knowledge gained complete independence from the state.
