Life and work

Bertold III inherited extensive possessions from his parents and enjoyed great influence in the Holy Roman Empire . Under his control were routes from Germany to Italy. He repeatedly accompanied the emperor Frederick Barbarossa in his campaigns.

In 1157, Bertold inherited the possession of the dying line of the Counts of Disensky. After the death of Count Eckbert III, von Formbach-Pitten entered the struggle for inheritance with the Count of Styria Ottokar III . As a result, Pitten went to Styria, and Berthold received Neuburg, Sherding and Windberg.

Bertop's brother Bishop Otton VI von Andeks of Brixen in 1165 granted him count rights in Norital and Pustertal, and later granted Vogt rights in his bishopric and in the Neustift Monastery.

In the 1170s, Bertold bought land south of the Inn River and built a bridge in the place where the city of Innsbruck later formed.

In 1173 he received from Frederick Barbarossa, as imperial linen, the Margrave of Istria-Krajn, which was previously owned by Engelbert III von Spanheim , his mother's cousin.

In 1180, after the fall of Heinrich Leo, the son of Bertold III - Bertold IV received the title of Duke of Meran, and the Andean dynasty became princely.
