Early years
Jake Pelkington was born on January 3, 1916 in the city of New York ( New York State ), he studied at the Brooklyn Cathedral School, where he played for the local basketball team. In 1936, he graduated from Manhattan College , where for four years he played for the Manhattan Jaspers team. Under Pelkington, the Jaspers never won the regular championship of either the Metropolitan New York Conference or the Independent Conference , nor did they enter the playoffs of the US Student Championship [1] [2] [3] [4] .
Professional career
He played in the position of center and heavy striker . In 1936, Jake Pelkington entered into an agreement with the New York Jewels team, playing in the American Basketball League (ABL) , with which he won the league title in the 1938/1939 season. He later played for the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots ( NBL ), Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons (NBL) and Baltimore Bullits ( BAA ). In total, he spent 7 seasons in the NBL, 4 seasons in the ABL, and 1 season in the BAA. In the 1943/1944 and 1944/1945 seasons, Pelkington, as a teammate of Bobby McDermott , Buddy Jennett , Chick Reiser and Jerry Bush, became the two-time champion of the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. Three times he was included in the 2nd national team of all the NBL stars (1941, 1944-1945) [5] . In total, during his career in the NBL, Jake played 226 games in which he scored 1949 points (an average of 8.6 per game), simultaneously becoming the 10th most successful NBL player in the history of the league [6] . In total, during his career in the BAA, he spent 54 games in which he scored 597 points (an average of 11.1 per game) and made 131 assists [7] . In addition, Pelkington as part of the Zollner Pistons six times participated in the World Professional Basketball Tournament , becoming his three-time winner (1944-1946).
Death
Jake Pelkington died May 1, 1982 at the 67th year of his life in the city of Fort Wayne ( Indiana ) [8] .
