History

The Itto Shoden Muto-ryu School was founded in the second half of the 1800s by a master named Yamaoka Tetsutaro Takayuki. Prior to creating his own system, Yamaoka studied a number of different styles of martial arts over the years. He paid the most attention to Ono-ha Itto-ryu and Nakanishi-ha Itto-ryu schools, in which he subsequently received menkyo kaiden . When creating his own transmission line, Yamaoka called it Itto Shoden Muto-ryu, thereby emphasizing that he had gone the right way of conveying the principles and methods of the Itto-ryu school . The term Muto (“without the sword”) refers to the concept of Yamaoki that the difference between the Sword and his own Self, between himself and his opponent is illusory, and that the fundamental unity of everything is the most important element in fencing.

To date, there are very few interns from the Yamaoka school. Itto Shoden Muto-ryu is currently practiced in Kanazawa , Ishikawa Prefecture . Murakami Yasumasa, the 6th head of the school, was trained in style techniques from the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Isis Kazuto. Itto Shoden Muto-ryu’s current tradition is Takehiro Izaki.
