Biography

Born in 1859 in the village of Prastio in Mesaoria [3] .

At the age of 13, he entered the Monastery of St. Panteleimon in the village of Mirtu near Kyrenia .

He graduated from the gymnasium in Limassol. He graduated from the Theological and Philological Faculties of the University of Athens , which he graduated in 1890. He returned to Cyprus and became a teacher and preacher in Limassol [3] .

April 16, 1895 was elected Metropolitan of Kyrenia [3] .

On May 22, 1900, the Archbishop of Cyprus Sofronii III died . After that, two hierarchs remained in the clergy of the Cypriot Orthodox Church: Metropolitan of China of Cyril (Papadopoulos) , nicknamed Cyrilatos, and Metropolitan of Cyrene of Cyril (Vasiliu), nicknamed Cyriludis. Both were nominated as candidates for the post of Archbishop of Cyprus, and not one of them was willing to give in to the other. The absence of other hierarchs in the Synod made election by the majority impossible. There was no clearly defined procedure for electing an archbishop. There was not among the two applicants for the archbishop's throne and a clear favorite. The result was a sharp antagonism between the two Cyril, which went down in the history of Cyprus as the " archbishopric issue ". The people themselves were divided into supporters of the Metropolitan of China of Cyril - the "Chinians" and supporters of the Metropolitan of Kyrenia Kirill - the "Kerynians". This confrontation was not only long-term, but also particularly acute. Each of the two Metropolitans Kirillov expressed his line on the national question of Cyprus. Supporters of the two Cyril, Chinese and Kerinians, also became known by the characteristics of the moderate and implacable, due to the political line of each side [4] .

The Patriarchate of Constantinople, after discussion with the British, decided to independently elect a new archbishop of Cyprus: on February 9, 1908, the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople unanimously elected Metropolitan Cyril of Kerinius for this position. The Kerynians celebrated. The reaction of the “Chinese” was immediate and decisive: the masses of the “Chinese” gathered in Nicosia with Greek flags, chanting slogans. Meanwhile, the “Cerinians” occupied the archbishopric in which both Cyril of China and Cyril of Kerin were located, and demanded that the procedure of ascension to the throne be started. The British authorities in order to avoid bloodshed expelled people from the archbishopric and transported two metropolitans to the governor's building. Then Cyril of Kerin, fearing bloodshed, announced that he did not accept his election, because he did not want, in his expression, to walk on the corpses. However, clashes and stone throwing could not be avoided, and the governor announced the introduction of martial law [4] .

On November 11, 1916, after the death of Archbishop Cyril II, he was elected Archbishop of Cyprus. His opponents in these elections were Metropolitan of China Meletius (Metaxakis) , Rector of the Kikk Monastery Archimandrite Cleopas (Papadimitriou) and Archimandrite Makarios (Mirianteas) , who later replaced Cyril as Primate of the Church of Cyprus.

In order to prepare the most educated clergymen of his Church, he established a special scholarship at the faculty for clerics from the island who study theology. The archbishop also established a special award, issued every four years for the most interesting works on the church or civil history of Cyprus [5] .

He was distinguished by a soft character and a strict ascetic life. He was more moderate than his predecessor Cyril II, as a result of which he was accused of excessive loyalty to the British occupation authorities of Cyprus. He was also elected as one of the 6 Christian legislators in the Cypriot Parliament. [5]

He died on November 16, 1933 from pleurisy [6] .

In March 2010, his grave was attacked by vandals. [7]
