Biography
Alexander Orlov was born on May 26, 1918 in the village of Velikaya Viska (now the Maloviskovsky district of the Kirovograd region of Ukraine ). After finishing nine grades of the school he worked as an accountant. In 1938, Orlov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Since 1942 - on the fronts of World War II. In 1944, Orlov graduated from the artillery school [1] .
By March 1945, the senior lieutenant Alexander Orlov commanded the battery of the 132nd Guards Artillery Regiment of the 60th Guards Rifle Division of the 5th Shock Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of Poland . On March 21, 1945, Orlov’s battery was one of the first to cross the Oder and took an active part in the battles for the capture, retention and expansion of the bridgehead on its western shore, repelling thirteen German counterattacks. At a critical moment in the battle, Orlov raised his gunners to attack, pushing the enemy back [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 31, 1945, for “exemplary execution of the combat missions of the command and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Orlov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 6707 [1] .
After the war Orlov continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1956, he graduated from the Military Artillery Academy . In 1965, with the rank of Colonel Orlov, he was sacked. He lived and worked in Belgorod .
He died on March 26, 1994, was buried in the Yaneshsky cemetery of Belgorod [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner , two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
A street in the city of Belgorod is named after A. I. Orlov
