Story
The film is set in Naples in the 17th century , during the Spanish occupation of Southern Italy . Miller Luca ( Marcello Mastroianni ) gets involved in a popular uprising and gets into custody. The Spanish governor-general Don Teofilo ( Vittorio De Sica ), a famous womanizer who has long laid eyes on Luca Carmela's pretty wife ( Sophia Loren ), decides to take advantage of the situation by suggesting that the beauty release Luke from prison on certain conditions ... to satisfy his lustful desires. While Carmela, having drunk Don Teofilo and having put him to sleep, was escaping to prison to Luka, he, in turn, had already escaped and was rushing headlong home, blinded by jealousy. Having rushed home, Luka finds himself in his bed the sleeping governor and, in the heat of jealousy, decides to take revenge, namely, to seduce and dishonor the wife of Governor General Dolores ( Yvonne Sanson ).
