The town hall was built in 1587–1589 (the finishing works were completed in 1595) in the style of Dutch Mannerism. The project of the town hall belonged to the Netherlands architect Antoni van Obbergen , the stone portal most likely created by Willem van der Meer. Erected for the needs of the city authorities, the town hall for a long time served as the center of the political, socio-economic and scientific life of Gdansk. Near the town hall lived the famous Polish astronomer Jan Hevelius , who served as mayor there and was also a hereditary brewer.
From the original furnishings and furnishings of 1595 in the town hall there is little preserved, its interior was almost completely redone in the years 1911-1914 in the neo - renaissance style . It collected elements of the interior of the various houses of noble residents of Gdansk. So, the portal of 1517 in the lower hall was moved from home to ul.Długa 45 . This is one of the few attractions of Gdansk, relatively few affected by the hostilities of 1945.
