Story

To get the money to treat her sick daughter, Shuji decides to rob the bank. Taking her legs off the scene of the crime, Shuji jumps up in a taxi, not knowing that Detective Kagawa is driving behind him.

At the same time, his wife Mayumi hears from the doctor about the plight of their daughter Michiko, but the doctor also warns that if the baby suffers this night, the danger will be over. Shuji, who came with the money, confesses to his wife how he got it. After him, detective Kagawa knocks on the apartment. Mayumi, who let him in, finding her husband’s gun, keeps the detective at gunpoint, asking him to allow her husband to stay near the sick baby for at least one this night. Kagawa spends the whole night in this house, wondering what to do with him - in good faith or in accordance with the law?

The next morning, Mayumi tries to help her husband slip away, and he succeeds. However, Shuji returns and surrenders to Kagawa so that justice can be done.

About the movie

The sixteenth film of Ozu was shot from the end of May until July 1930 based on the translation of the novel From Nine to Nine by Oscar Shishgall, published in the Japanese New Year periodical in March of that year [1] . When the head of the Shёtiku studio, Kido Shiro, first read the novel, he immediately set out to begin the film adaptation and commissioned the development of the script to the experienced studio author Kogo Noda [1] . In the original story, the bank’s main character is robbed the week before the ill-fated night when detective Kagawa arrives at Shuji Hashizume’s home. To make the film more intense, Noda put everything in one evening. The film begins as a criminal action movie (bank robbery), but then it smoothly turns into a social psychological drama, all of which takes place inside one apartment. Having received the script, Ozu embodied it on the screen in the pro-Western style already familiar to him with a strong influence of modernism, as well as the use of quotes and borrowings from American cinema, which he greatly admired at that time [1] . The influence of American cinema on Ozu is noticeable in many other works of the director.

Additional Facts

  • Premiered in Japan on July 6, 1930 .

Notes

... This is my first experience with Tokihiko Okada [3] . In six of the seven parts of the film, the action takes place in one place. I did not get enough sleep due to the continuous work schedule. Nevertheless, this is my favorite work and it is of great importance to me. Kido Shiro [4] uttered praises addressed to me and even persuaded me to go to rest at the hot springs.
