History

Seaside Boulevard in Warnemunde

Founded around 1200, Warnemünde was originally a simple fishing village and did not have any significant significance for the economic and cultural development of the region. In 1323, it lost its autonomous status, as it was acquired by the city of Rostock in order to protect the city and ensure its access to the Baltic Sea. As a popular resort, it began to form only in the 19th century. Now the population is a little over 8 thousand people.

Economics

The whole history of Warnemuende is connected with fishing. Every day, dozens of schooners and longboats go fishing. A feature of Warnemünde is that most of the fish is sold immediately upon arrival at the local port in the fish market, located on the banks of the Alter Strom canal. In the presence of tourists and buyers, fish are cleaned, gutted and smoked immediately. Eel , trout , herring , and salmon are especially popular.

An important economic role for Warnemünde is currently played by one of the largest ferry terminals in Germany, with regular direct high-speed connections to the ports of Denmark , Sweden , Norway , and Finland . Since 2004, the Finnish company Silja Line has been carrying out regular ferry services between the port of Rostock and St. Petersburg . The Finnjet cargo and passenger ferry, which serves the route, belongs to the “ice” class of sea vessels and can simultaneously take on board 1,780 passengers and 400 cars.
