Jefferson County is located in the United States , Alabama . It was officially formed on December 13, 1819 . As of 2013 , the population was 659,479 people. Got its name by the name of the third US President Thomas Jefferson .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the county’s total area is 2,910.6 km², of which 2,881.6 km² are land and 29.0 km² or 1.00% are water bodies.

Demographics
According to the 2000 census [3] , 662,047 people live in the district, comprising 263,265 households and 175,861 families . The population density is 595 people per km². There are 288 162 residential buildings in the district, with a building density of 100 buildings per km². Racial composition of the population: white - 58.10%, African - Americans - 39.36%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.21%, Asians - 0.90%, Hawaiians - 0.03%, representatives of other races - 0.59 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.80%. Hispanics made up 1.55% of the population, regardless of race .
As part of 30.80% of the total number of households , children under the age of 18 live, 46.10% of households are married couples living together, 17.20% of households are single women without a spouse, 33.20% of households households are not related to families, 28.70% of households consist of one person, 9.90% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.04.
The age structure of the district: 24.80% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident of the district is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.50 males.
The average household income in the district was 36 868 USD , per family - 45 951 USD . The average earnings of a man were 35 954 USD against 26 631 USD for a woman. The per capita income was USD 20,892. About 11.60% of families and 14.80% of the total population were below the poverty line , including 20.20% of young people (those who were not yet 18 years old) and 12.70% of those who were already over 65 years old .
