History
At the beginning of 1877, Pavel Tretyakov invited Kramskoy to paint a portrait of Nikolai Nekrasov . By that time it was already known that the poet was terminally ill. Kramskoy worked at home with Nekrasov from February 7 to 16, 1877. The result of this work was a portrait of a “head without hands”, which was later used in writing the image of Nekrasov in bed, which was completed in 1878, after the death of the poet, who died on December 27, 1877 (according to a new style - January 8, 1878) [1] .
The painting was bought from the author by Pavel Tretyakov in 1878. She was presented at the 6th exhibition of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (“Wanderers") in Moscow in 1878 [1] .
Description
The canvas depicting Nekrasov reclining on the bed consists of several parts. The image of the poet’s head is precisely that portrait of the “head without hands” that Kramsky painted at the bedside of the patient Nekrasov in February 1877 - this part of the painting is attached to the main canvas [1] , on which you can see the stitches associated with this operation [2] .
The room in which Nekrasov is located is precisely the one in which he worked for two decades. On the wall are portraits of Nikolai Dobrolyubov and Adam Mitskevich , a bust of Vissarion Belinsky is visible behind the head [4] .
As follows from a letter from Kramskoy to Pavel Tretyakov , written in April 1877, the portrait was originally conceived in a slightly different way [5] :
| Tell me, will you leave another portrait of Nekrasov for yourself? The whole figure on the bed when he writes poetry (and which verses are his last, the last song on March 3 is “Bayushki-bayu!” Simply, definitely one of the greatest works of Russian poetry!). The head is in the same turn, in the hand is a pencil, a piece of paper is right there, on the left is a table with various accessories necessary for it, a cabinet with hunting weapons overhead, and a dog below. |
