Ciona (lat.) - a genus of tunic from the class of ascidians (Ascidiacea). Possess a bag-shaped body covered with a tunic . They lead an attached way of life, on the end of the body facing away from the substrate they carry two siphons: oral, through which the body absorbs water, and atrial (cloacal), through which water is released from the body. In 2008, the genomes of two species of the genus were completely sequenced: Ciona intestinalis and Ciona savignyi .
