Biography

Born May 6, 1828 in Tula in the noble family of Pyotr Lvovich Begichev . He received his education after graduating from Moscow University , after which he served in the government chamber, in the Board of Trustees and at the imperial theaters. For some time Begichev managed the Moscow noble assembly .

Appointed manager of the Moscow Imperial Theaters , he took up the reorganization and transformations both in the troupe itself and in the outside of the theatrical setting. Under him, the Moscow Maly Theater began to give large fees. Thanks to the assistance of Begichev, the charter of the Theatrical Literary Committee was created, and he also took part in its development.

V.P. Begichev wrote a lot (mainly for the stage, both independently and together with K.A. Tarnovsky and P.A. Kanshin ), his works were often staged. He himself sometimes performed on stage and was a success. Some of his works appeared under the pseudonym M. Shilovsky [1] .

His Moscow home attracted many distinguished guests: I. Turgenev , A. Dargomyzhsky , A. Serov , N. Rubinstein and A. Ostrovsky , as well as Tchaikovsky , who was a close friend of the Begichev family. According to Kashkin’s recollections, it was precisely thanks to Begichev’s initiative that in 1873 Ostrovsky was commissioned to write a fairy tale performance from Tchaikovsky’s music “The Snow Maiden”.

In society, Begichev was considered a "secular lion" and had a reputation as a don-Juan. He was the one who told A. P. Chekhov a case that formed the basis of the story “The death of an official ” [2] [3]. About him MP Chekhov recalled:

"AT. P. Begichev ... was an unusually fascinating person, sensitive to art and literature, and we, the Chekhov brothers, spent hours on end with him ... and listened to him telling us about his adventures in Russia and abroad ... Begichev was strewed with memories ” .

In 1882, in connection with the abolition of the post of inspector of the repertoire, which Begichev occupied since 1864, he retired with the rank of state councilor . He died in St. Petersburg on November 17, 1891 , was buried in the Volkov Cemetery.

Maria Vasilievna in the portrait of I. Robillard (1859)

From the first wife of Vera Nikolaevna (maiden name is not known) had two sons - Nikolai (born in 1856) and Fedor (born in 1858); and two daughters Nadezhda (1853–1940; writer, in marriage to Golubev) and Maria (1857–1921; children's writer, married to A. S. Kiselev, owner of the Babkino estate) [4] .

In 1866, Begichev married Maria Vasilievna Shilovskaya (1825-1879), the daughter of the poet and translator V.E. Verderevsky (1800-1872), who was widowed after the death of the Ryazan landowner Stepan Shilovsky (1823-1865). Maria Vasilievna was known as one of the best salon singers, a student of the Italian teacher and singer D. David son. Mussorgsky dedicated his romance “What is the Word of Love to You” to her, and Balakirev - the romance “Frenzy.” She composed music herself, the author of several romances.

Her marriage with Begichev was childless, but her two Shilovsky sons were brought up in the family: Konstantin (1848–1893; singer, artist and amateur sculptor) and Vladimir (1852–1893; married to Countess Anna Alekseevna Vasilyeva, in 1877 received the surname, the emblem and title of the deceased ).
