Znak Publishing House was founded in 1959 by Polish public and cultural figures associated with the Znak and Tygodnik Powszechny magazines. The first director of the publishing house was Jacek Wozniakovsky . At first, the administration of the publishing house was in the editorial office of the magazine Tygodnik Powszechny. In the early period, Jerzy Turovich , Stanislav Stomma and Ganna Malevskaya collaborated with the publishing house. During the time of the Polish People’s Republic, the publishing house positioned itself as a publishing institution independent of the communist authorities and published Catholic and philosophical literature. The first book of the publishing house was Droga krzyżowa by Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski .
After 1989, the administration of the publishing house began to be located in the former Lovcha estate on Tadeusz Kosciuszko Street.
Since the mid 90-ies of the XX century, the publishing house began to publish Polish and foreign poetry, works on philosophy, popular science and children's publications.
In 1992, the publishing house founded the Znak Foundation for Christian Culture, whose president was Polish journalist Stefan Mechislav Vilkanovich . In 2003, the publishing house founded the Higher School of Europe named after Jozef Tischner .
Currently, the publisher publishes about 150 books a year.
