Biography
Born July 31, 1926 in the village of Parfyonovo [1] in a peasant family. Russian. After graduating from a seven-year school, he worked on a collective farm. In December 1943, the Tonshaevsky RVK of the Gorky Region was drafted into the Red Army . Since May 1944, he fought on the 3rd Belorussian Front.
Private Shishmakov distinguished himself in battles on the outskirts of the city of Kaunas on July 29, 1944. When the company lay under the enemy’s hurricane fire, masking itself in the grass, it crept into the location of the enemy’s trenches and fired at the machine gun crew of the enemy from his assault rifle. Capturing a machine gun, Shishmakov opened fire from him on the Nazis, destroying more than 30 soldiers. When the cartridges ran out and the captured machine gun fell silent, the seriously wounded fighter, having thrown up his machine gun, continued the battle. The company, thanks to the heroic act of Shishmakov, went on the attack and completed a combat mission, breaking through the enemy’s defense with small losses [2] [3] .
The shooter of the 226th Infantry Regiment, Red Army Shishmakov, died on July 30, 1944 from wounds in the hospital [4] . He was buried in a mass grave at the Military cemetery in the city of Kaunas.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for exemplary performance of the combat missions of the Command at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown to them, Red Army soldier Ilya Nikolayevich Shishmakov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [2 ] .

- The bust of the Hero is set in the center of the village of Tonshaevo in 1975.
