History

The Diocese of Ierapetra is the oldest in the historical area of Lacithion and is considered one of the first ones created in the territory of Crete. According to the historian Flaminio Corniglia in his Kreta Sacra and the work of Athanasios Papadopoulos-Kerameos in "Martyrology of the Holy Ten Martyrs", the city was founded around 68 AD e.

Of the bishops who occupied the pulpit in the era of Ecumenical Councils, Simphor (343) and Euphronius (457) are known. However, the diocese is repeatedly mentioned in the Notices of the Church of Constantinople until the late Middle Ages, and in different ways: as the Hierapidna (῾Ιεραπύδνης), Hierapetra (῾Ιεραπέτρας), separately Ierskaya and Petra (῾Ιερᾶς, Πέτρер,) Ιερᾶς, Γερπέτρας).

In the Middle Ages, the city was occupied by the Genoese, and after the 4th Crusade (from 1204) - by the Venetians . With them, the city already bore a modern name - Ierapetra. During this period, instead of the Orthodox, authorities placed Roman Catholic bishops on the island.

During the period of Turkish rule (1669-1898), all bishops were Orthodox. Then the Jerus and Sith dioceses stood out, which in 1832 merged into the Jerosity diocese. From 1932 to 1936 the dioceses of Hierositia and Petra were united into one and were called the Diocese of Naples. In 1936, both dioceses were restored in their original form.

In 1962, by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Hierosites diocese was elevated to the rank of Metropolitanate and became known as the Hierapithian and Sitia.
