History

The university was established in 1979 as the Institute of High Technologies. The institute began to train students in the faculties of civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. At first, there was a three-year study program, 105 students studied at the university. In 1984, the faculties of civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering switched to a four-year training program. In 1985, the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus agreed on the opening of a university under the name “APU”. Members of the Higher Education Council of the Republic of Turkey visited the Institute of High Technologies in order to transform it into a university.

In 1986, by a decision of the Parliament of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on the establishment of the Education Fund of Northern Cyprus and VMU (18/86), the Institute of High Technologies was transformed into a state university with the name "VMU". The faculties of engineering, arts and sciences, business and economics, and the School of Computing and Engineering were opened.

In 1990, the Faculty of Architecture was opened, as well as the School of Tourism and Hotel Management. The Law Faculty was opened in 1996, the Faculty of Communications in 1997, and the Faculty of Education in 1999.

In 2005, the VMU, with reservations, became a member of the Association of European Universities (as the University of united Cyprus [4] ) and the International Association of Universities (as the University of Turkey [5] .)
