Biography
Oleg Gorobiy was born on February 7, 1971 in Voronezh . He began to actively engage in rowing in early childhood, was trained under the guidance of coach Vladimir Semenikhin in the Voronezh section of Dynamo . He achieved the first serious success at the age of nineteen, when, as part of a quadruple kayak, at a distance of 500 m, he won first the USSR championship, and then the world championship in Polish Poznan. In 1991, he was again the best in this discipline in the national championship heats, however, in the world championship in Paris he took only the third place. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was awarded the right to defend the honor of the country at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , and made his way into the combined team of athletes from the former Soviet republics. On a kayak-four, which also included rowers Vladimir Bobreshov , Vyacheslav Kutuzin and Sergey Kirsanov , participated in the kilometer race, but in the end their crew reached only the stage of semi-finals.
After the final collapse of the Soviet Union, Horobiy continued to participate in major international competitions as part of the Russian national team and subsequently won many more awards (from 1993–2003 in various disciplines, he in total became the champion of the country 26 times). In 1993, he successfully performed at the World Championships in Copenhagen, with his four won gold at a distance of half a kilometer and bronze for a kilometer - by the end of the season for outstanding sporting achievements he was awarded the honorary title " Honored Master of Sports of Russia ".
