Biography
Daniil Odintsov was born in 1918 . In 1941 he was called up for service in the Navy of the USSR. From the same year, on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, he was the gunner of the 18th Separate Marine Battalion of the coastal defense infantry of the Black Sea Fleet [1] .
Distinguished during the defense of Sevastopol . On November 7, 1941, Odintsov, as a member of the group of political instructor Nikolai Filchenkov, participated in repelling fierce German counterattacks in the area of the village of Duvanka (now the Verkha Sadovoye within Sevastopol ). At the critical moment of that battle, he, with a bunch of grenades, rushed under an enemy tank, destroying him with his life. He was buried in a mass grave in the cemetery of the village Dergachi in Sevastopol [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 23, 1942, Red Navy Daniel Odintsov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for "exemplary performance of the combat tasks of the command on the front against the German invaders and for showing courage and heroism." He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and World War 1 degree. Forever enrolled in the lists of the personnel of the military unit [1] .
A street in Sevastopol is named after Odintsov [1] .
Criticism
A detailed analysis of the German documents in recent historical works shows a complete absence of tanks and tank units with the composition of the upcoming 11th army of E. Manstein , who had only self-propelled artillery in the 190th assault guns division and light reconnaissance armor [2] . On this basis, the specific circumstances of the feat of N. Filchenkov's group are seriously doubted [3] . The main Soviet version of the feat is based on an article by the senior political officer of the head of the agitation and propaganda department of the Krasny Chernomorets newspaper Meer Naumovich Kogut, which was written 7 months after the events. It is not based on official reports of the reconnaissance group and there are no references at all to the specific survivors of the battle [4]. Here is the source of the article [4] described by M. Kogut:
About this unprecedented feat of the five Black Sea defenders of Sevastopol passed from mouth to mouth. But no one knew the names of the fighters who, in difficult days for the city, with their bosoms blocked the way to Sevastopol for the fascist tanks. The other day we had to meet with one sailor , who told the whole story of this feat.
The article not only describes in detail the actions of each participant in the battle, but also provides fantastic details like the attack of the Soviet positions under the guise of flocks of sheep, the destruction of tank crews from small arms through the viewing slits. In the middle of an article, nameless heroes suddenly receive specific names and titles. M. N. Kogan himself in the aftermath of the capture of Sevastopol in 1942 was captured and died, so his sources can not be verified. At the same time, the surviving sailor of the Marine Corps, G. E. Zamikhovsky, in the December battles for Sevastopol, awarded the medal "For Courage", in his 2006 memoirs gives a different picture of what happened [5] :
But I do not remember the "famous" feat of the political instructor Filchenkov’s group! Forgive me, but I was under Duvanka on November 7th, and our company stood right behind the 18th Marine Corps under the command of Chernousov. There were no German tanks there! The tanks went to the position of the consolidated battalion of cadets of the Lenin Komsomol coastal defense school. The battalion held positions near Bakhchisarai. Find in Russia two former cadets of Roitburg and Israilevich. They are still alive. Let them tell you how 1,200 sailors of this battalion with training rifles heroically covered Sevastopol with their breasts, and almost all of them laid down their heads.
Of the immutable facts now there is the nomination of the Filchenkov group to meet the advanced reconnaissance squad of the Ziegler group, which could include light armored vehicles, and possibly self-propelled guns Stug III from the 190th division of assault guns. The group took the fight with unknown results and died in full force, which does not detract from the feat of its fighters [3] .
