Biography
Nikolai Vasilievich Kovalev was born in the village of Glushkovo, Kursk province, on January 8 (20), 1888 . He studied at an agricultural school, after which he was drafted into the army. The reconnaissance team commander was injured and was awarded the St. George Cross .
In 1919, Kovalev became a member of the RCP (b) and joined the Red Army, took part in hostilities in the Crimea. After 1922 he worked as a teacher in a school, an agronomist, and also in the party organs of the Kursk province. In 1927, Nikolai Vasilievich moved to Moscow, where he became the head of the plant growing department of the People's Commissariat of Agriculture. In 1928, Kovalev was appointed director of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden , in 1929 - director of the All-Union Institute for Plant Protection . Since 1931 he worked as deputy director of the All-Union Institute of Plant Production .
In 1936, Kovalev, with the support of N. I. Vavilov, received a Ph.D. in agricultural sciences without defending a dissertation. He then became director of the Maykop Experimental Station. In June 1941, Nikolai Vasilievich was arrested at the denunciation of one of the opponents of Vavilov, written back in 1937, and exiled to Kazakhstan for 5 years.
After his release, he worked at a meat and dairy state farm, in 1946 he was appointed head of the fruit department of the Central Asian VIR station. Since 1951, Nikolay Kovalev worked at the Uzbek Institute of Horticulture, Viticulture and Winemaking. In 1959 he returned to Maykop, where he studied fruit crops of the genus Plum .
In 1968 he was awarded the Order of the Red Star .
June 14, 1969 Nikolai Vasilievich Kovalev died.
