The corps was created by renaming on February 5, 1944 from the 1st Assault Aviation Kirovograd Corps for the military distinctions, stamina and mass heroism of the personnel shown in the Battle of Kursk and in battles in Right-Bank Ukraine ^[1] .

In the spring of 1944, corps formations participated in the Uman-Botoshan operation. Accurate and powerful attacks by attack aircraft at enemy resistance nodes in this operation contributed to the successful offensive of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. In early July 1944, the corps was transferred to the 2nd Air Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front, in which it operated until the end of the war. In the Lviv-Sandomierz operation, he supported the tank and combined-arms armies during the battles to destroy the enemy group in the Brody region, with the development of the offensive to pp. San and Wisla , forcing them and capturing the Sandomierz bridgehead.

Драченко — единственный летчик в Военно-Воздушных Силах , который удостоен всех высших военных государственных наград (один из 4-х полных кавалеров ордена Славы, удостоенных звания «Герой Советского Союза»).
