Biography
Vasily Ovchinnikov was born on December 13, 1901 in the village of Ekaterinovka (now the Krasnooktyabrsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region ). After finishing four grades of school, he worked at home. In April 1920, Ovchinnikov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He participated in the battles of the Civil War, was seriously injured. In 1925 he was discharged to the reserve. He lived and worked in the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) region. In 1936, Ovchinnikov graduated from the concurrent school, after which he headed the savings bank in the Sormovsky district [1] .
In September 1939, Ovchinnikov was re-drafted into the army. He participated in the battles of the Soviet-Finnish war, being the political instructor of the company of the 387th Infantry Regiment of the 136th Infantry Division of the 13th Army of the North-Western Front. On February 13, 1940, near the village of Oinala, 38 kilometers southeast of Vyborg, the Ovchinnikov company repelled 6 Finnish counterattacks. On February 16, 1940, in the Kureli region (now the village of Krasnoselskoye, Vyborgsky District, Leningrad Region ), the company successfully broke through the enemy defenses, capturing 8 bunkers . February 18, 1940 in the battle Ovchinnikov was wounded, but continued to fight. On February 24, 1940, at the critical moment of the battle, Ovchinnikov replaced the platoon commander and destroyed the Finnish pillbox. On March 11, 1940, Ovchinnikov’s company went on the flank of the enemy and knocked him out of his position, after which he established himself on them and repelled 3 counterattacks [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 7, 1940, political instructor Vasily Ovchinnikov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for "exemplary performance of command missions of the command on the front of the fight against the Finnish White Guard and personal bravery and courage " numbered 333 [1] .
Since the beginning of World War II - in the army. September 18, 1941, having been surrounded for a long time, Ovchinnikov died in battle with the enemy. It is considered missing [1] .
