Biography

Grigory Ovodovsky was born on November 14, 1906 in the village of Prognoy (now Heroic of the Golopristan district of the Kherson region of Ukraine ). Before being drafted into the army, he worked as a fisherman. In 1928 - 1931 he served in the Navy of the USSR. Demobilized, he continued to work in the Baltic. In 1941, Ovodovsky was again called up for the fleet. From the same year - on the fronts of World War II. In 1942, he graduated from advanced training courses for command personnel. In 1943, Senior Lieutenant Ovodovsky commanded the 1st link of the 4th division of the minesweeper boat minesweepers of the OBVM KronMOR KBF. In 1944, he was the commander of the 1st Guards Battalion Division of the Naval Forces of Ladoga Naval Design Bureau of the Baltic Fleet, and in the fall of 1944, Lieutenant Commander Ovodovsky commanded the 7th division minesweeper of the 2nd Baltic Fleet Trawling Brigade [1] .

During the war, Ovodovsky made more than 100 exits on trawling, wiring and landing. In 1944, under his leadership, trawling was successfully carried out in the Vyborg Bay, due to which 320 naval mines were destroyed in ten days and the way for the ships of the Baltic Fleet to Vyborg was laid. In August 1944, the Ovodovsky division paved the way for Tallinn , destroying 248 mines in only two days, and in May 1945 in Pillau . The trawlings were carried out under conditions of constant air raids, however, the combat mission was successfully completed by the division [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 8, 1945, for “exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism”, Captain-Lieutenant Grigory Ovodovsky was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the medal “ Golden Star ” under number 2919 [1] .

After the war, Ovodovsky continued to serve in the Soviet Army. In 1954, he graduated from courses at the Naval Academy. In 1956, with the rank of captain of the 1st rank, Ovodovsky was sacked. He lived and worked in Leningrad . He died on May 7, 1974, was buried at the Krasnenky cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] .

He was also awarded three orders of the Red Banner , orders of Nakhimov 2nd degree and World War 1 degree, two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .

In honor of Ovodovsky, a fishing vessel was named [1] .
