Biography
Mikhail Iudovich was born on February 21, 1920 in the village of Andreevo (now Pavlovo-Posadsky district, Moscow region) in a peasant family. He lived in Moscow . He graduated from 10 classes. In the Red Army he was called up by the Tagansky RVK of the city of Moscow in 1937. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1942. He graduated from the Engels Military Aviation School of Pilots in 1940. In November 1940 - junior lieutenant , pilot of the 226th high-speed bomber aviation regiment as part of the 16th high-speed aviation division of the Kiev Special Military District .
During the war
Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. At the end of 1941, he retrained for a new plane - the Il-2 , on which he went through the whole war. In August 1942 - the flight commander. In battles on the Voronezh front, he took up the post of commander of a squadron of the 800th ground attack aviation regiment .
At the time of conferring the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the navigator of the 800th Assault Aviation Regiment ( 292nd Assault Aviation Division , 1st Assault Aviation Corps , 5th Air Army , 2nd Ukrainian Front ) captain Stepanov completed 112 by December 1943 sorties, destroyed a significant amount of enemy military equipment, shot down 3 enemy aircraft in air battles. By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of July 1, 1944, Stepanov Mikhail Iudovich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 1972).
In June 1944, he was deputy commander of the 144th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment [1] . He occupied the post of navigator of the regiment, deputy commander of the regiment (ended the war in this position), commander of the regiment after the war. He carried out his last combat sortie in April 1945 along the Potsdam railway junction, where, according to intelligence data, several enemy echelons had accumulated. Approaching at a very low altitude, a group of attack aircraft, led by Stepanov, struck an unexpected blow to the enemy’s hub and destroyed the enemy’s manpower and equipment, damaging the railway tracks.
After the war
After the war he continued to serve in the Air Force. Retrained for new jet types of aircraft. In 1951, the guard lieutenant colonel M. I. Stepanov graduated from the Air Force Academy with a gold medal [2] . Tragically died on July 13, 1952. He was buried in Moscow at the Rogozhsky cemetery (station number 4).
