Palolahti made his debut in the World Cup on January 27, 1995 , in December 1997 he won his first victory at the World Cup stage in the sprint. In total, he has 2 victories in the World Cup, 1 in the sprint and 1 in the relay. Palolahti's best achievement in the overall World Cup standings is 27th in the 1998/99 season.

At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, he was 20th in free sprint and 53rd in the classic 15 km race.
