Palolahti made his debut in the World Cup on January 27, 1995 , in December 1997 he won his first victory at the World Cup stage in the sprint. In total, he has 2 victories in the World Cup, 1 in the sprint and 1 in the relay. Palolahti's best achievement in the overall World Cup standings is 27th in the 1998/99 season.
At the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, he was 20th in free sprint and 53rd in the classic 15 km race.
During his career he participated in two world championships , the best result is 4th place in the sprint at the 2001 world championships .
He completed his sports career in 2007.
