The championship included four qualifying rounds, which took place over eight gaming days from April 8 to 16, 2014 at the Ponds Forge international sports center in Sheffield and in which 112 participants played (105 professional snooker players and 7 amateurs). The 16 winners of the last qualifying round went to Crucible, where they were joined by the first 16 seeded players, and, starting from the 1/16 final, they all played the elimination. In the first three rounds of the tournament in the arena of the Crucible Theater, two game tables were used, and one in the semifinals and finals.
Former world champions Steve Davis, Mark Williams, Graham Dott and Peter Ebdon, as well as six-time finalist Jimmy White and two-time finalist Matthew Stevens failed to qualify for the championship. The 24-year-old tournament debutant Michael Wesley made one of the greatest sensations in the history of the world championships, having won in the first round of one of the main favorites of Dean Junhui, who won five rating titles of the season. Scottish player Alan McManus has won his first Crucible match since 2005 and, for the first time since the 2005 World Cup, reached the quarter finals by beating the 1/8 finals of 44-year-old Ken Doherty, who won his first match in the first round. Crucible since 2006. Welshman Dominic Dale has won his first fight in the main stage of the World Cup since 2000, and also for the second time in his career after the 2000 World Championship he reached the quarter finals. Australian Neil Robertson in his quarterfinal match against Jad Trump completed his 100th Century in the 2013/2014 season, becoming the first snooker player in history to reach that height, and in the semifinal match against Mark Selby, he increased his record to 103-hundred breaks, but lost Englishman with a score of 15:17, passing it to the finals. The second finalist was defender Ronnie O'Sullivan, winner of the 2012 and 2013 world championships, who won the quarterfinal and semifinal matches against Sean Murphy (13: 3) and Barry Hawkins (17: 7), respectively, with the last sessions left. The highest series in the main stage of the tournament, 140 points, was made by Neil Robertson in the first round match against Robbie Williams.
The winner of the tournament was Mark Selby, who lost to O'Sullivan in the final match with a score of 3: 8 and 5:10, but managed to win 13 of the last 17 frames of the fight and became the world champion for the first time. Thus, the winning streak of Ronnie O'Sullivan in Crucible was interrupted, which reached 14 matches. Selby outplayed Michael White (10: 9), Alistair Carter (13: 9), Alan McManus (13: 5), Neil Robertson (17:15) and five-time world champion Ronnie O'Salivan in the final fight with by 18:14. This victory was the fourth ranking success in Selby’s career, as well as the first ranking championship that Mark won in a year and a half (from the UK Championship 2012), and brought him leadership in the world ranking. Thus, Mark Selby, who in addition to winning the British championship three times at the Masters, became the ninth snooker player in history to win all triple crown tournaments.
Tournament
The 2014 World Cup was the 80th World Snooker Championship, which took place annually from 1927 with interruptions from 1941 to 1945 and from 1958 to 1963. The tournament is one of three Triple Snooker Crown tournaments (along with the UK Championship and Masters), as well as the most prestigious and highest paid of all snooker competitions. Since its foundation, the World Cup has been held in various cities of England, as well as on the island of Jersey (1957), in the Republic of South Africa (1965) and in Australia (1971, 1975). Since 1977, the world championship has been held in the arena of the Crucible Theater in Druga.
The 2014 World Cup was held under the auspices of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association and included in the Main Tour calendar, as well as being the twelfth and final ranking snooker tournament of the 2013/2014 season.
Matches of the main stage of the tournament (31 matches) were played on two tables of the Crucible Theater arena, and the qualification competition took place at the Ponds Forge International Sports Center in Sheffield, England and ended a few days before the start of the World Cup.

Rating Points
The World Cup had the maximum distribution of rating points among all rating tournaments. The winner of the competition received 10,000 rating points. For comparison, in the second triple crown rating tournament, the UK championship, the winner received 8,000 points, in the open championships of Australia, India, Wales and German Masters, the winner received 5,000 points, and for winning the mini-rating tournaments of the PTC series, players received 2,000 rating points each . Rating points at the World Championships had a formal status and no longer had practical value, since immediately after the World Cup the official rating of snooker players became a two-year monetary rating.
Tournament Format
128 players took part in the 2014 World Cup, of which 121 were main tour participants and 7 were amateur. 64 participants - players with seeding numbers from 65 to 120, Igor Figueireda, who did not have rating points and accordingly did not have a seeding number, as well as 7 fans - started the tournament with the first qualifying round in the format of a elimination match (32 games), which took place 11 days before the main stage. In it, players with seeding numbers from 65 to 96 played against the rest of the snooker players. 32 winners of matches of the first round entered the second qualifying round, in which they played against participants with sowing numbers from 33 to 64 (32 games). All 32 winners of the matches of the second round played among themselves in the third qualifying round (16 games), after which 16 winners of the matches of the third round went into the final fourth qualifying round, where they played against participants with sowing numbers from 17 to 32 (16 games). The World Cup qualification was first held at the Ponds Forge International Sports Center in Sheffield, England [11] . Thus, 16 players entered the main stage of the world competition and joined 16 snooker players with seeding numbers from 1 to 16 [12] [13] .
16 winners of the fourth qualification round and 16 players who entered the championship without qualification played in the main elimination stage, starting from the 1/16 final, where the members of these two groups played among themselves. The draw of the tournament predetermined the impossibility of meeting the top 16 players before the 1/8 finals, the top 8 players before the quarter finals, the players from the first four seeded before the semi-final and the first two seeded before the final of the World Cup. Five rounds of the main stage took place over seventeen days in the largest snooker arena in the world at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield, England.
Qualification
The seeding of players for the 2014 World Cup was formed according to the official rating on March 31, 2014 (after the 2014 PTC finals). The first seeding number was received by the current champion of the tournament, Ronnie O'Sullivan, and since he was not in the top 16 of the world ranking, Robert Milkins, who occupied the sixteenth line in the rating, did not get a place among the sixteen snooker players who got to the tournament without qualification.
Qualification Progress
First day (April 8)
The qualification of the 2014 World Cup began on April 8 at the arena of the Ponds Forge International Sports Center in Sheffield and took place over three sessions at eleven tables. Thus, on the first day of the game, 11 players went to the second round. A strong game in the match against amateur Shane Kasl was demonstrated by Martin O'Donnell, who became the first winner in the 2014 World Championship, defeating his opponent with a score of 10: 1 with a series of 100, 119, 139, 90, 64, 97 and 67 points. Liam Highfield and Zhang Anda won confident victories over Khalid Balaid from Libya and Andrew Padget from Wales, respectively, with the same score 10: 2. Among the fights in which only the first session was held, it should be noted the match between 48-year-old Tony Drago and 39-year-old Robin Hull. With the same margin, the Chinese Li Khan finished the first session of the meeting with Rachaetsen Yataruk, having issued a hundred-year break of 104 points. After the first half of the match, the 19-year-old Belgian player Luca Brasel lost 4: 5 to the 108th seeding number Lee Page, despite 118 points, which reached the 67th ranking, and in a veteran match between 44-year-old James Watana from Thailand and Alex Borg from Malta, the Asian broke ahead with a score of 5: 2, but lost the last two games of the session, and the number leveled up to 5: 4 in favor of Watana.

On April 10, matches of the second qualifying round for the World Cup began at Ponds Forge. It took place in the same format as the previous one, and thus, on this day 11 snooker players made it to the third round of qualification. 42-year-old Englishman Rod Lawler, who reached the semifinals of the rating German Masters this season [27] , was defeated by Kiren Wilson with a score of 3:10. Kurt Maflin, representative of Norway, beat Welshman Daniel Wells with a score of 10: 7. In the sixteenth game, Maflin went to the maximum series, which he had drawn up already twice in his career, and killed all 15 red balls through black, but was mistaken when playing the pink ball and stopped at 134 points. With the highest break of 78 points, the 44th seeded Anthony McGill of Scotland defeated Thai Thanawat Tyrapongpaibun - 10: 7. After midnight, three more matches ended. Davis won three points, scoring a 98-point streak in the fifteenth game, but Craig was left with the 46-minute, eighteenth frame of the match. Thus, Steve Davis, who has been on the main tour since 1978, has lost his place among professionals, not getting into the top 64 monetary rating for the season. The oldest player on the main tour did not win a single match in the main stages of rating tournaments in the 2013/2014 season.

Peter transferred the game to the decisive frame, in which he lost 2:39 in the score, but made a small comeback, winning the game and in the match after the last black ball scored.
In the afternoon session of the third gaming day of qualification, the first parts of ten more matches were held.
