History
The name of the city comes from the name of the screaming Indians village located in these places. The city was founded in 1833, in 1881, a normal school for the training of African-American teachers was founded on a local former plantation, which was later transformed into a university, which was listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places in 1974 as one of the first educational institutions for blacks.
