History

Temple and Parish House

The Catholic parish in Vornjany was founded in 1462 [3] . The wooden church was built at the expense of a certain Marina, the widow of Sunigailo or one of his sons, this is the first ever mention of the village of Vornyany [4] .

A modern stone church was erected in 1767-1769 on the site of an old wooden one in the late Baroque style at the expense of the owner Vornjan Maria Abramovich , designed by architect A. Kosakovsky [5] . The church was consecrated in the name of St. George (George) in 1769 by Bishop T. Zenkovich.

In 1880 and 1909, it was slightly rebuilt.

During the Second World War, services in the church were conducted by priests Jan Selewicz , later declared the “ Righteous Among the World ” [6] .

After the Second World War, it was closed and converted into a club; it was returned to the Catholic Church only in 1990.

April 11, 1990 re-consecrated [3] .

Architecture

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - a monument of late Baroque, is a one-nave temple with a transverse transept [2] . The architectural dominant of the main facade is the high side three-tier towers with arched openings and niches, crowned with curly finishes.

The almost equal nave along the length of the rectangular apse of the presbytery is blocked, like the nave itself, by a cylindrical arch with supporting arches [1] . There are choirs above the narthex , where a spiral staircase leads. The original painting and sculptural decoration were not preserved. The altar of the temple is decorated with icons of the school of Shimon Chekhovich [4] .

The Church of St. George is the central part of the architectural ensemble, organized along an elongated rectangular square, which, in addition to the church, consists of a pharmacist’s house and a parish house (plebania), placed on both sides of the church at an angle to it [7] .
