Biography
Sergey Novikov was born on July 15, 1925 in the village of Petrovka (now - Usmansky district of the Lipetsk region ). From 1933 he lived in Voronezh , where he graduated from seven classes of school and a school factory apprenticeship . In January 1943, Novikov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since March of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War [1] .
By October 1943, Sergeant Sergey Novikov commanded the detachment of the 550th Infantry Regiment of the 126th Infantry Division of the 54th Infantry Corps of the 51st Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front . Distinguished during the Melitopol operation . On October 19, 1943, at the critical moment of the battle on the streets of Melitopol, Novikov replaced himself with the retired platoon commander, after which, directing the subunit, he reflected eighteen German counterattacks. In those battles Novikov personally destroyed 2 tanks and 22 soldiers and an enemy officer. On the night of October 21-22, 1943, Novikov's platoon remained to cover the withdrawal and regrouping of the battalion, successfully completing the combat mission assigned to it [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 1, 1943, Sergeant Sergey Novikov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union for "courage and heroism shown in the struggle against the German invaders." He did not manage to get the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal , since on November 4, 1943, he was seriously wounded in the battle in the head and died the next day. He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Grigorovka, Chaplinsky district, Kherson region of Ukraine [1] .
He was also awarded a medal [1] .
In honor of Novikov, vocational schools and a pioneer camp in Voronezh were named, streets in Voronezh and Grigorovka [1] .
