Biography
Nikolai Novikov was born on May 6, 1920 in Smolensk . He graduated from high school. In 1939, Novikov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1941, he graduated from the Smolensk Artillery School. Since April 1942 - on the fronts of World War II [1] .
By October 1943, Captain Nikolai Novikov commanded the division of the 118th artillery regiment of the 69th Rifle Division of the 65th Army of the Central Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper . On October 15, 1943, Novikov’s division was among the first to cross the Dnieper in the Loevsky district of the Gomel region of the Byelorussian SSR , destroying 1 artillery and 2 mortar batteries, 21 enemy machine guns. In battles for holding the bridgehead, the division repelled 10 enemy counterattacks, destroying 10 firing points, 3 mortar batteries, and about 80 enemy soldiers and officers. In those battles Novikov was seriously wounded, from which he died on November 4, 1943. He was buried in the village of Radul, Repki district, Chernihiv region of Ukraine [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 24, 1943 for captain Nikolai Novikov posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union for “exemplary performance of command missions of the command on the front of the struggle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism”. He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , World War 2 degree and Red Star [1] .
In honor of Novikov named school in his homeland [1] .
