Biography
Pacheco was born into a poor family, but became rich by investing in an abandoned silver deposit, which he revived. In the mid-19th century, Pacheco gained fame as a successful, progressive and pragmatic silver magnate.
Gregorio Pacheco won the election in 1884, during which a struggle broke out between three candidates: liberal Eliodoro Camacho, conservative Aniceto Arce and, in fact, Pacheco.
A conservative by nature, however, he did not immediately join the Arce party, and argued with him and the liberals for power in the country. Arce, however, was initially not enthusiastic about the fact that Pacheco burst into big politics, but few in the country could argue with him on the state or managerial abilities. Soon, both conservatives entered into an agreement under which Pacheco pledged to support Arce, who served as vice president in the government, during the 1888 election. This agreement secured the Conservative party in power until 1899.
Pacheco as head of state was faced with numerous liberal uprisings and coup attempts. However, he was supported by the military. Fearing pressure through family members, he sent his family to Europe during his reign. He insisted that his children learn English, considering it the international language of business.
As agreed, he supported Arce in the 1888 election, which he won. After that, Gregorio Pacheco went to his estate Nukchi, where he died in 1899.
