The New Middle Ages is a concept used by a number of authors to describe either the current social situation or as a futuristic scenario and implying a return of modern or future society to certain norms, practices, social or technological features characteristic of the Middle Ages . It was widely used in the late XX - early XXI centuries [1] . At the same time, various authors evaluate the proposed New Middle Ages in different ways, both negatively and positively: either as the decline of civilization , or, conversely, as new opportunities [2] [3] .
The idea of the New Middle Ages was first expressed by Novalis in 1799 in a speech “Christianity or Europe” [3] . The concept was developed in detail by Berdyaev in the eponymous book “The New Middle Ages” (1924) [4] [3] . In the middle of the 20th century, the concept was developed by P. A. Sorokin , G. P. Shchedrovitsky, and A. A. Zinoviev [3] .
The idea of the New Middle Ages became widely known after the publication of the essay by “The Near Medieval Future” (1973). Umberto Eco took part in the discussion about the New Middle Ages with the essay “The Middle Ages have already begun” [1] and Ulrich Beck [5] . The concept influenced the post-apocalyptic genre in literature and cinema [2] .
Political futurology and the image of a political future in the light of the New Middle Ages was developed by John Gray in his work “Enlightenment on Enlightenment,” where he described what the world might have looked like after the failure of liberal democracy.
