Biography
Born October 16, 1920 in the city of Vyazma, now Smolensk region, in a working class family. He graduated from 7 classes, studied at the evening school of working youth. He worked as a driver. In 1938, he was drafted into the Red Army . In 1939 he graduated from the Saratov Tank School . During the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940, the second lieutenant Sholokhov participated in the battles on the Karelian Isthmus .
World War II
From the first days of the war, he fought on the Karelian , South-Western fronts.
The commander of the platoon of the 349th tank battalion of the 158th tank brigade, senior lieutenant Sholokhov, distinguished himself in battles in the area of the village of Nesterny, Kharkov region. In the period from June 11 to 29, 1942, on the Voluysk, Derevenskoye, and Oktyabrsky section, the enemy, preparing to break through the defense of the Soviet troops, concentrated up to 150 tanks, 2 infantry regiments, and a large amount of artillery. Sholokhov and his unit were ambushed in a grove on the southwestern outskirts of Nesternoye. On June 30, the enemy went on the offensive, introducing a train of 150 tanks into battle. Sholokhov's platoon, letting the tanks go 200 meters, began to shoot them point-blank. In search of shelter in the village of Nesternoye, enemy tanks set up the side, this advantage was also used by Sholokhov. For 3 hours of battle, Sholokhov burned 24 German tanks. Replenishing the ammunition, Sholokhov was sent to the village of Volchya Alexandrovka to cover the left flank of the battalion. By this time, before the battalion of motorized infantry, the enemy was trying to take possession of Volchya Alexandrovka. Sholokhov, having immediately entered the battle with his tank, scattered the enemy motorized infantry battalion, burned over 10 transport vehicles and destroyed up to 100 enemy manpower [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of December 2, 1942, for the exemplary performance of the Command's combat missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown to this, Lieutenant Sholokhov Dmitry Dmitrievich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [ 1] .
Assistant Chief of Staff of the 158th Separate Tank Regiment, Senior Lieutenant Sholokhov, in battles on the Stalingrad Front south of Stalingrad from November 20 to 27, 1942, was at the forefront, performing reconnaissance missions on the BA-64 armored car . On November 23-24, Verbovsky killed up to 100 Nazis with machine-gun fire, seized a convoy of 50 vehicles with food, uniforms and ammunition, and captured 107 enemy soldiers and officers. For military merits, by an order of 12/11/1942, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star [2] .
In May 1943, the deputy chief of staff of the 36th Guards Tank Brigade of the 4th Guards Mechanized Corps of the Southern Front, Sholokhov was sent to study at the academy [3] .
Post-war time
In 1945 he graduated from the Military Academy of the Armored and Mechanized Forces of the Red Army named after Stalin . He served in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces . In 1975 he was awarded the third Order of the Red Star. Since 1975, he was transferred to the reserve with the rank of colonel. He lived in Moscow . He died on June 27, 1983. He was buried at Babushkinsky cemetery .
