Biography

Liu Ying was the son of Guangqi Hou Liu Xiang and the grandson of Guangqi Hou Liu Xun; Liu Xun was the son of Chu-Wang Liu Xiao - the son of Emperor Xuan-di .

In the year 6, Regent Van Man poisoned the 13-year-old Emperor Pin-di . Due to the young age, the emperor did not leave an heir, and by that time none of the descendants on the male line of his grandfather, Emperor Yuan-di , had survived; therefore, they began to look for a new emperor among the descendants of the great-grandfather Ping-di - the emperor Xuan-di. There were 53 great-grandchildren of Xuan-di alive, but they were all adults, and Wang Man wanted to control the throne on behalf of the minor emperor; therefore, it was announced that it was not appropriate for the throne to be inherited from each other by representatives of the same generation (although Pin-di had inherited the throne from his cousin Ai- several years before). Consequently, the new emperor was to be chosen among the 23 great-great-grandchildren of Xuan-di, who at that time were children or infants. At that time, a stone was discovered in Chang'an with a red inscription: “Anhang Prince Wang Man should become Emperor”. Wang Mana’s ally was his aunt, the Great Dowager Empress Wang (the widow of Emperor Yuan-di), who then granted him the title of “Acting Emperor” (假 皇帝) so that he would rule the country until one of Xuan-di’s great-great-grandchildren was elected and will not come of age.

In the spring of 6 years, Wang Man elected the one-year-old emperor Ping-di Liu Ying, who was given the epithet "Zhuji" ("Baby"). A number of members of the Liu imperial clan, suspecting Wang Man of the intention to usurp the throne, raised rebellions against Wang Man in the following years, but all these rebellions were crushed, which further strengthened Wang Man’s personal power. Therefore, he decided to take the throne to himself and establish a new dynasty. In the winter of 8 years, it was announced that a divine instruction had been received from the founder of the empire, Han Liu Bang , stating that the throne should be transferred to the Wang family. Wang Man declared himself the first emperor of the new Xin Empire , and Liu Ying received the title of "Dingan Prince."

Formally, Liu Ying received a principality of 10,000 households, in which the calendar and clothes of the Han empire were allowed, and where sacrifices were made to the spirits of the emperors of Han. However, in fact, Liu Ying was actually under house arrest under strong guard; he was married to Wang Man’s granddaughter.

In 23, the Xin empire was overthrown , and Wang Man was killed. Liu Xuan was enthroned under the throne name "Genshi-di." However, soon the country began to fall apart, various groups began to take power in different places. In the year 25, Fang Wang and Gong Lin, at the head of an army of several thousand people, abducted Liu Ying and occupied Linjing (in modern Qingyang , Gansu Province ). However, Liu Xuan sent Chancellor Lee Song against them, who defeated the rebels and killed Liu Ying.
