Municipal elections in Syria were held on December 22, 2011 .

Content

Context

December 11, during clashes between government forces and demonstrators, 18 people died in Syria. Opposition demanding the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad called for a general strike. According to NATO, more than 4 thousand people, including 307 children, died in the 9 months since the start of the civil war [1] .

Voting

43 thousand candidates claimed 17629 seats in local councils in 1355 administrative units. In order to prevent election irregularities, special invisible inks were developed. However, most Syrians did not vote, as some supported the opposition’s call for a boycott of the election, while others were simply afraid to leave home [2] .

Result

Most places were given to supporters of NPFs.
