The SETI Institute is an American tax-free nonprofit research organization . Created November 20, 1984 and is located in Mountain View , California . The organization’s task is to “explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe .” SETI means English. search for extraterrestrial intelligence - "search for extraterrestrial intelligence ." One of the institute's programs is to use both radio telescopes and optical telescopes to search for intentional signals from extraterrestrial civilizations . Other studies conducted as part of the Carl Sagan Center's program to study life in the Universe include the search for exoplanets , life on Mars and other planets within the solar system , and inhabited worlds in the Milky Way galaxy (including the study of extremophiles ). SETI 's public relations work includes promoting science, education, and evolutionary studies among faculty and students, working with NASA on research missions such as Kepler and SOFIA , and producing the weekly Big Picture Science radio science program.

Tools used by SETI scientists include Allen Telescope Array ground telescopes , several ground-based optical telescopes such as the Donald Shine Telescope at the Lick Observatory , Keck Observatory Telescopes and the IRTF Telescope in Hawaii, and the Very Large Telescope in Chile. SETI researchers also use space telescopes, mainly the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Herschel Space Telescope . SETI scientists also participate in space missions, the New Horizons mission to Pluto, the Cassini mission, currently in orbit around Saturn, and the Opportunity and Curiosity rovers.
