Feat
On the night of September 7 to 8, 1999, Guards Lieutenant Igor Sarychev, at the head of the reconnaissance group, secretly penetrated the depth of the militants' defenses, reconnoitered their fortifications and concentration sites in the Novochurtakh region of the Novolaksky district of Dagestan. The group was discovered and attacked, the militants managed to cut off the scouts' escape route to their positions.
Assessing the situation, he ordered to attack the fortified point of militants at a height of 323.1. The militants were stunned by the sudden attack of the surrounded paratroopers and fled from a height. A scout, entrenched in the trenches abandoned by them, over three hours successfully repelled the onslaught of the enemy.
When the ammunition began to run out, Guard Lieutenant Sarychev organized a breakthrough of the enemy defense. Acting as part of triples, mutually covering each other with fire, the fighters escaped from a height and broke away from the pursuit of the enemy. In the event of a breakthrough, Lieutenant Sarychev covered with fire the retreat of his subordinates, received multiple wounds from the close breaking of a mine, but continued to fight. Already having gone a considerable distance from the battlefield, the officer lost consciousness, his wounds were fatal.
Thanks to the obtained intelligence, the fortified height of 323.1 was taken by the main forces of the 119th Airborne Regiment on the afternoon of September 8.
For courage and heroism shown in the performance of military duty during the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus region, Guards Lieutenant Sarychev Igor Vladimirovich was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation by post of the President of the Russian Federation of November 12, 1999 (posthumously).
